International Men's Day 2020

_“ Its important to take note, and take time to reflect

Take time on this day, ensure its not you that you neglect

The pressures of the world, can weigh heavily on the mind

Whether it be work, family or worries of another kind

Give yourself the care, and the time you deserve

Ensure that your interests, are the ones that you serve

A day for you to celebrate, and appreciate your way

A day for men, International Men’s day ”

International Men’s Day was held on the 19th November, with the theme this year being ‘Better Health for Men and Boys’.

November is mostly well-known for holding month-long worldwide event ‘Movember’ in relation to the charity who aim to raise awareness towards men’s mental health and ‘aim to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.’

For men there has always been a stigma around mental health and a sense of unease if they would want to speak up or show their emotions.

However, over the recent years this has slowly been recognised and through people’s efforts such as celebrities, charities and large organisations they have tried to turn this interpretation around to show that there should be no difference in the way that men and women are treated, or how they should be made to feel for feeling as a human should…

This was a very passionate subject to us an organisation therefore we as a team wanted to take part, raise awareness and put together a video, tips and content to share how our male team members keep happy and healthy, physically and more importantly, mentally.

Let’s hear what they had to say…

“One of my top tips is to reconnect with your hobbies as I think as men, women or people in general we get so bogged down with the stresses of work, the pressures of providing for our families or any other things that can weigh you down that you disconnect from your hobbies and things that keep you happy.

So the best thing you can do is find time for things you enjoy whether that be reading a book, art, drawing, going to the gym or playing a sport – anything to give you that escapism from the pressures of real-life.

Me personally, I love football. I play it a couple of times a week and when I’m playing football I don’t think about anything else, but football. Then when I’m finished I am physically exhausted but in a good way but playing it does look after me mentally and physically. “

“ The first thing I do everyday is I meditate every morning just for 10 minutes – you just need to wake up, get yourself in a quiet space, you can probably download an app where you can meditate for free, which will be guided and much easier to do.

The second is everyday I will exercise for a minimum of 20 minutes, so whether that’s a HIIT workout with Joe Wicks on YouTube or I go out for a bit of a run, that will be the next thing that I do, it is exercise every day.

The third is before I go to bed every night I will read 20 pages of a fiction book such as Sherlock Holmes, crime, thriller, whatever you like. This is a good way to get you in a good headspace where you are not thinking about any problems or stresses that you’ve got before you go to sleep; Instead you are just imagining the book, the characters and it’s just pulling you in a completely different headspace before you sleep.”

“Over the course of the two lockdowns I’ve really got into my cycling, so each week, trying to get out there, beat those numbers a bit further or a bit longer – that’s been a really good sort of stimulant for me, to give you some purpose to get up and do something, as well as a real sense of achievement when you complete those things.

On the other side is really making time for friends out there as well, so whether you’re meeting to exercise or just making yourself available to have these conversations. Throughout both lockdowns I have had conversations with friends that have either needed someone to talk to and vent; but also myself as well, as it isn’t nice being couped up indoors for this amount of time.

So it is really important that we are having these conversations and is a great idea and incentive to stimulate these things. “

“I have been going on long walks, I’ve been doing it in the evening for about an hour and I listen to a podcast, my favourite music or just disconnect a little bit and it really helps me gain some clarity and improves my overall well-being.

The other thing from a selfless stand-point is to ensure that you are checking in with friends, family, neighbours, anyone that you feel that could need the help but it is certainly something that we all need to be a bit more conscious of and definitely helps by just messaging someone and making sure they are okay – which could really help that person and their mood.

We need to be kinder, more helpful and spend more time with our loved ones and is something we definitely will not regret doing.”
